Living by the Mantras: Parenting Wisdom with Phrases Kids Remember
What if your life could be filled with joy, all the time? In part two of our No Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda series on living without regrets, Colleen Souza and co-host Bryan Souza talk about finding joy in the journey. For Colleen, a journey is a daily thing: "We can treat it like a burden or we can treat it like an exciting journey."
Colleen and Bryan share simple, common sense parenting ideas for making the everyday feel like an adventure: using the short morning window before school to plant seeds for your child's day, Donut Fridays for kids who are ready on time, a kids' menu night where the kids plan and serve dinner, a surprise lunch date pulled out of school, and family gingerbread building that the grown kids still ask for. They also talk about traveling as "sojourners" instead of tourists, getting kids off screens and out into nature, why a national parks pass is a great family gift, leaving them wanting more, and the time to "ask forgiveness, not permission" and steal a Saturday for family fun.
"You can earn money back. You can earn items back. You can't earn hours back."
On the beach at Cayucos, they had a choice "to look at the ocean or join the ocean." Action cures fear. Get out there and find joy in the journey.
Colleen Souza shares practical parenting wisdom, common sayings and mantras kids remember, with a focus on solutions, not problems.

Living by the Mantras: Parenting Wisdom with Phrases Kids Remember
Self-control fails less often from a lack of desire than from a lack of a plan. In this episode, Colleen opens her self-control toolbox and shares five tools parents can use with their kids: name your weak spots, remove the enemy, track and measure progress, practice positive self-talk out loud, and protect rest and sleep. It's practical parenting wisdom built on solutions, not problems, and on the family mantra "If it's wet and not yours, don't touch it." Like so many common sayings we grew up hearing, this one gives kids a simple way to stop and think before they act.

Self-control is the ability to manage impulses, emotions, and behavior so a child can choose the next right action instead of the easiest one. It is not the absence of strong feelings. It is what a child does while those feelings are still there. Training self-control is mostly training confidence and calmness. In this episode we talk about the five practices that help parents build both. Like so many common sayings we grew up hearing, this mantra holds real parenting wisdom for little ones and tweens alike.

When you walk into a hard job with positive energy, you change the room and bring the people around you along, and that's a powerful example for kids. Colleen's mantra "If the job's too tough for most people, it's just about right for me" is about bringing that energy and ignoring the haters. Let’s talk about how to win the job and make those around you better. Our kids, and especially our tweens, are watching how we show up, and that's where mantras like this one do their quiet work. Showing kids how to bring energy and tune out negative voices is common sense parenting that builds resilience.

Hard work means the most when it goes toward something you love, and that passion is contagious for everyone around you, including your kids. This episode of "If the job's too tough for most people, it's just about right for me" is about doing what makes your heart sing. But how do we deal with those who don’t support us? Colleen shares how to chase your passions and ignore the haters. It's a little parenting wisdom for grown-ups too: when we love what we do, our kids notice. Helping kids find work that makes their heart sing is common sense parenting that keeps them motivated for years.
